Running 2.4 kernel on proliant 1850R

Hi
 
I am attempting to install SUSE 8.1, on a Compaq Proliant 1850R.
When the machine boots, it locks up and crashes.
 
I understand from looking at previous postings to this list that the 2.4.??
kernel does not run on this hardware.
Has anybody on this list managed to get SUSE 8.1 working with kernel 2.4?
 
Any guidance much appreciated!
