turned out to be a known bug in 3.0.5 with kio_thumbmail.

backed out the 3.0.5 upgrade and put 3.0.3 back - problem disappeared.

the bug took a couple of weeks to surface and then refused to do away 
even after uninstalling 3.0.5 and reinstalling it..had to backout to 
3.0.3 to sort it...?
