Sendmail startup problems... please advice

Hi Guys,

I just did a fresh install of redhat linux 8.0 on my system and I am 
using sendmail-8.12.5-7.  When I try to start sendmail
it freezes at the following prompt:

Shutting down sendmail:                                    [FAILED]
Shutting down sm-client:                                   [FAILED]
Starting sendmail:                                         [  OK  ]
Starting sm-client:

and does not load sm-client.  I have made sure that the following line is in
the submit.mc file:

define(`confPID_FILE', `/var/run/sm-client.pid')dnl

and tried,

m4 /etc/mail/submit.mc > /etc/mail/submit.cf

but I am still getting the same problem.  Any suggesitons would be
appreciated.
