SUMMARY: getting magic sysrq to work on SuSE Linux

Dear All,

Thanks go to Hohn Hearns, John H Robinson and Theo Boersma for their
suggestions, and to Roger Whittaker for providing an important
clue. Also to a colleague Dan Jones for telling me about Cntrl-Alt-F10.

The sysrq feature *does* work on SuSE kernels, but in order to see the
messages that get displayed you need to switch the console to screen
10 (by typing cntrl-Alt-F10). If you are on screen 1 (say) the
commands will work silently.

Even on screen 10 my Alt-Sysrq-h failed on one system. But Alt-Sysrq-t
and Alt-Sysrq-m can be used as non-destructive tests.

For more information about the sysrq key (which can get you out of
trouble if your system is in a mess) see
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysrq.txt .SuSE kernels are already
configured to use it, but you need to ensure in addition that
/proc/sys/kernel/sysrq contains 1. This will happen automatically at boot time
providing you set ENABLE_SYSRQ="yes" in /etc/rc.config .

Regards,
Bob
