UPDATE: Interesting problem....

Those of you suggesting that I dd the tape device and look for the pertinent 
information, it's now been tried -- I can see the files that got on there 
due to my fat-fingering, but nothing else.  I *KNOW* the old data that I 
need to recover is larger than the data that's overwriting it, however, I 
can't seem to get past the EOD mark on the tape. 

Suggestions?
