key question ... what changed ? If it didn't hang before,
something must have changed.

I have a cron script that runs sensors every hour
  and logs chip temps.
When that stops logging tells when sensors
stopped completing. Those incomplete tasks hang around till reboot.

Suggestions? Advice?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Other than the sensors command things seem to run normally.
10 or 11 cores plus the GPU run 100%  doing
boinc/seti@home and more.  Producing results that get verified
by other folks.

This and information below suggests that IPMI is running in your system.
IPMI does not synchronize with other means accessing system hardware,
specifically in respect to environmental monitoring.

It might well be that IPMI software interferes with your monitoring code.
If you are running any IPMI application in parallel, you'll likely have to decide
one way or another. If you don't use IPMI but it is enabled, you might
want to consider disabling it.

Can you look into that ?
