Provided you have followed the instructions in Documentation/SubmittingPatches, the best approach is to make sure your email was addressed to the person maintaining the subsystem or driver in question (as well as to the appropriate mailing list, of course), and to nudge that person from time to time if he appears to have forgotten about you.
