Could it be that the remote host uses the same route for packets to 172.26.244.216 and to 172.26.18.33?
Without the multi path route, both ping -I 172.26.244.216 172.26.240.4 and ping -I 172.26.18.33 172.26.240.4should work correctly. If they don't, there is probably an incorrect route at the other side.
