Should you wish to accept slightly power performance with the x86-32
bit series kernels,
the modem may be supportable.  But this would require a complete
reinstallation of your Ubuntu system.

More over there is no guarantee that the modem would thus be
supportable, as we have not had a LSI update of the core modem code in
several years.   My own system is a X86_64 Macbook, so I cannot myself
test whether the modem code will even compile under current kernels.

In summary, if you have an alternate ethernet or wireless CONNECT, best use it.
