   Another advantage of having a separate   /home partition is that
you can install multiple Linux distros on the same drive and share the
home directory. You will then be able to use the old one until you get
all the bugs worked out of the new one.
Also , if it works don't fix it! The long term support version will
still be there when the old one is no longer acceptable and there is a
good chance the new version will have the problems fixed by then.
