Derek,

The root  ownership of
 1 root Âroot   10 2011-02-19 12:27 /dev/ttySM0 -> /dev/pts/1>
may be  your problem.  Try  not using the bootup activation and do it
manually after bootup
$ sudo modprobe martian_dev
$ sudo martian_modem
$ sudo wvdialconf
