Yes, I've tried different bs, no joy.

I'm taking a FC7 and centos 5 machine down there today, this may help
narrow the problem to the iSCSI box.

If you increase the dd bs size does it help? If you do

dd if=... of=... bs=256k

do you get the same result?

Also what nic are you using? Also is it possible to try a current kernel
and open-iscsi.org?  You could try the centos5 kernel with the
iscsi-initiator-utils-5 or 6* rpm. I noticed a weird issue with
centos4.4/RHEL4 2.6.9 based kernels and slow read speed.
