ThinkPad X220 volume level unsupported

Regarding the ThinkPad X220.

cat /proc/acpi/ibm/volume reports: level unsupported.

Other events such as thinklight and video report: level supported, but still tpb will not show any onscreen display (OSD). I know that xosd is working on my system from a test program I ran.
