Ruler Units

Hi
I am new to this list and have only recently started using Gimp 2.45 
regularly.
I tried searching the messages for an answer and Message #7503 came 
close.<The answer is to turn off "dot for dot" in the Image Window 
prefs.>
I want to set the ruler units to cm for all images. Can work out now 
how to do it for new images [<The answer is to turn off "dot for 
dot" in the Image Window prefs.>], but not when opening older 
images. 
Would appreciate any help
