Hi, Tina!  I've been using the GIMP for digital scrapbooking since 2005.  I
love it!  There are a few tutorials out there, if you do a google search.
I've, for the most part, been able to go through tutoritals designed for PSP
or Photoshop and figure out how to duplicate things in the GIMP (but not
written up tuts for it - LOL).  Really, once you play around with the GIMP
some, you'll be able to look at a PS or PSP tut and figure out the same
steps in the GIMP.  There are some decent books out there, too, that help
with this.  For Christmas I got this one:

It is really well written and has ways to do the effects you are interested
in.

Anyway, to make things appear 3-D, I usually apply a bevel to it and a drop
shadow (both script-fus).
