First time user of GIMP,need help

Hi all, 
    I just down loaded Gimp Yesterday. And I am in a bind;  I cannot 
open any pics in GIMP!?   It is saying they are the wrong file type?  
All the pics I am trying to work on are JPEG.   What am I missing?? 
I would appreciate any help.
