IMHO "Nick" was asking for a step-by-step guide for Gimp,
starting from scratch, which means he indeed has not been playing
around with Photoshop or so.. 
He has a point: there is not a good introduction (as far as I can see)
in Gimp, starting from scrath, so one can get that understanding of
basic image manipilation a.s.o. 
It's too easy too refer to Photoshop. It's like saying that one should
take Internet Explorer in order to be able to use Firefox.......
It's a big problem that the learning curve for Gimp is rather high,
while at the same time there indeed no, or not enough, Gimp-help
for starters is available.
