there is always the tutorial book "the artist's guide
to gimp effects".  this would be a good source of
information for you as well as step-by-step-
how-to-do-it that should springboard you into
understanding image manipulation a bit better and give
you a basis for further experimentation with the
program.

you can get the book from no starch press or from
oreilly press.  orielly press handles many books form
other publishers like no starch press.
