I agree with you , you may have no problem
running any software from an USB key, but it appears
that some users can't be lucky as you are¨each time
they plan to use their favorite software :

I can confirm with you that the official gimp win32 runs
from an USB key, don't ask me if I had it
really tested meanwhile, but I can confirm
(with or without you :) 
that we tested it and it didn't launch (XP SP2 amo)
The Mozilla Foundation is "facing" such a problem
and communicates in the way they choose to do so.


Anyway , we are preparing 1.1 RC1H (hopefully the last one
in the 1.1 release candidates and before we reach the Omega :)
where the latest GIMPVS will use Gimp latest source code 
and will be able to run and co exist
with the stable releases switching gimp python modules 
accordingly to the GIMPVS invoker not hard and
a little modification to Gimp where you set an env variable
- we have to check it is effectively passed to the PYTHONVS
interpreter )

We won't provide the corresponding portable
version since it is in the works for next coming releases
But don't be desappointed, a fine compensation
will be available , but shush , it is being tested
right now ;).Oh, And it has to do with cg too (Computer
Graphics)
