I have been using GIMP for about a year, but only the photo image
portion. I take pictures with a Nikon D80 camera. Very often I take
low light pictures with high ISO 1600, resulting in a noisy picture (I
use Nikon's ViewNX as raw converter). I find de-noise in GIMP
inadequate. Another user recommended Greycstoration which works out
to be a very good plugin. All the other features for post processing
are great. Initially I use UFRaw as a converter (but not as good as
Nikon's ViewNX). If you do not have a raw converter, you can try
UFRaw as a plugin. Here are the links.

Download Greycstoration 2.5.2 and unzip. Copy the Greycstoration
executive to the Gimp 2 plugin directory and you are all set.
