It applies to almost all jpeg images.  (I tested 10, and  2 opened
right away).  For the particular one is question, I resaved it under
another name, and can open right away. The original still took 30 sec.

Something has changed from 2.2 to 2.4.2.  Also, why is it that
GimPhoto 1.4 can open faster (altho still slower than 2.2, but at
least usable).
