GIMP 2.4.2 open file is very slow

I installed the winxp version gimp-2.4.2-i686-setup.exe (after
deleting the previous gimp 2.2).  Everything installed fine, but when
I opened a jpeg image, it opened an alpha channel (the black and white
squares) first, and then it scrolls across block by block and line by
line add the actual image to the alpha channel.  This took about 30
sec.to open this image. I did not have this problem in gimp2.2 where
the image shows instantaneously.  This problem is true for all 2.4
versions. 

I reinstalled gimp2.2 and it opened the jpeg instantaneously.

Then I installed gimphoto 1.4 (which is based on the latest 2.4).  It
opened with an alpha channel as well, but then it brings up the image
very fast (altho not as fast as the gimp2.2). So now it is usable.

I have a single core AMD64 monile 4000+ running at 3.0GHz (pretty fast
for a single core).  So, it looks like gimp-2.4.2-i686-setup.exe is
compiled with something that cause this delay in opening image files.  

Any help will be appreciated.
