What do you want to do? Gimp does many things, perhaps you only use a few of them and don't need those features that take up extra memory. There are freeware photo enhancement tools such as DCE Autoenhance, photobie or photofiltre (note spelling). With photos though, a bare bones photo uses several megabytes to edit, let alone adding filters and layers, so your lack of memory will always be a problem for photos. For graphic editing, I'll leave it to others as I don't do this.

Really, though, the answer is to get a newer machine. A memory upgrade is not realistic for you; memory chips for a P2 are different from current memory chips and the memory, even second-hand, would cost more than a better second-hand machine. A P3 can be picked up for around $50, or a P4 can be had for less than a couple of hundred. It is a quantum increase in performance from a P2 to a P3, and again to a P4. I'm afraid this is the most realistic option despite your wish to make a P2 work.

Nick.
