GTK 12.2.1 ??

At the GIMP Download pages, there is no more mention of the necessity
of the GTK package.
1. is GTK still necessary ? (I suppose)
2. The latest one mentioned with GIMP 2.2 was gtk+-2.10.13. However,
on the GTK-site, there are more recent ones, the latest gtk+-2.12.1.
3. Would it be a good idea to install gtk+-2.12.1 on my computer
(Windows XP, German) ? Maybe it could olso solve some problems the
others have with printing ??
