Paul- this I already understood but I get images from friends in my 
email and GIMP jumps in to open those as well.  The attachment might be 
a jpeg but right clicking results in a box labeled OPENING PICTURE  and 
below it says WHAT SHOULD THUNDERBIRD DO WITH THIS FILE?  Then it has 
OPEN WITH.. and GIMP is the first thing listed, then a drop down that 
says OTHER. Well, I tried the OTHER to locate WINDOWS PICTURE AND FAX 
VIEWER in that list and its not there either. Very frustrating digging 
for hours in ones own computer.
