problems with GIMP

The more experience I gain with the program the more I think its not a 
fully functional program or its lacking functions. Not sure which.

I've had the frustration of creating an outline then clicking over to 
the move tool and the outline I had just created disappeared. Adobe 
Illustrator doesn't do that. And I know- this isn't Illustrator. :) I 
also attempted to find a way to have text follow in the outline shape of 
the heart and I can't see a way to produce  that effect.

And when I created a sort of Valentine heart, went to fill it with red 
and it filled with green. If I did something to cause that I'm not aware 
of it.

Little bit frustrated.
