You are right after checking the 8bit uncompressed 12800x12800 file
was 526MB. The file I was talking about which was 800MB was a 12bit
uncompressed tiff with 7680x13824 size.

Will this change or it is a OS limitation?

Under linux it freezes like I "tried" to explain but it will
eventually load the picture and once it is loaded its quite fast.
Impressively :D

Thanx for the tips I will test that as soon as I reboot under windows.
I just installed linux and wanted to see if the performance would be
better. I actually loaded the 500MB picture and it took a bit less
time than in Windows.

The machine Im using has 1GB of ram, but many of the systems here have
fewer than this and some have more. What would be a good ratio for the
tile cache? 3/4 of the machine RAM?

I'll check this out!

Btw I tried and was succesful in loading a 12 bit picture onder linux
but all I get is a big black rectangle.. so I assume it has something
to do with the 12 to 8 bit conversion.
