AFAIK there is no menu command to do that, nor is it shown in the context menu when you right-click a layer.  It really is something you can't do unless you already know how.

... and it also works for the link icon (normally, AFAIK there is a bug in 2.8), and of couse also in the Channels and Paths lists.
