After much fussing around I wiped out the .gimp-2.6 file from my home directory. Then I downloaded the 2.6.11 source in bzip form. Then I went through the usual machinations. When I restarted gimp it couldn't find the documentation locally but offered me the option to use the online html version. I chose that option and that is what is working now. I suspect there was something in my .gimp-2.6 directory that was left over from a Salix download of gimp and that was messing things up. But in any case when I click the Help->Gimp Manual button I go to the web page version automatically and instantly via Firefox. This is the latest anyhow.
