Is 32 MB VRAM too little? It's reproducible even on 640x480 px imagesâ

That is, /var/log/Xorg.0.log says

for my

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 771/671 PCIE VGA Display Adapter (rev 10)

But yes, hardware/driver trouble seems likely :-/
