Maybe this could help you, but it does need making and installing
which might be a bit hard for a "newbie"

Alternatively, use your synaptic to install imagickMagick (there is
even a front end for I beleive)

You can do mass resizings with that from the command line (try
googling it)

I am sure there are other approaches.
