ufraw_batch and ufraw plugin

[apologies for the repost, sent it to the wrong forum first time]

I'm trying to automate as much as possible the conversions between raw (cr2)
and a format usable in gimp. At the moment I load the raw file in gimp and use
the ufraw plugin to do the conversion and save the result as a .xcf file.
However if I use the ufraw_batch tool to convert to a suitable format .ppm or
.tiff the result is usable in gimp but the exif data is lost.

So, what does the ufraw plugin do that keeps the exif data while this is
lost
with ufraw_batch?
