I am a total beginner with Gimp. I have a digital photograph with what I would call "hat shadow". The two people are wearing hats which cast a dark shadows over their faces. How can I remove the shadows?

Thanks for any links to tutorials. I have googled for fixes and haven't found anything that addresses this problem.
