A newbie question:

How do I add a layer mask when both "Add Layer Mask" and "Add Alpha
Channel" is greyed out. Also many of the other menus are greyed out
like "Filters/Colors/Color to Alpha".

The picture I am trying to edit is a png picture which already has some
transparent parts.
