Re: [ogfs-users]Comparison results: Redhat GFS 6.0 vs. opengfs + opendlm

Hi Anthony,

Not sure if you sent this to the list or not but I figured I'd cc it for
the archives.

In brief, the steps are:
- download source RPMS (I got mine from ftp.redhat.com, they ARE NOT
linked anywhere from the redhat web pages on GFS so you just have to dig
in the source tree a bit).
- You need to be running a redhat enterprise kernel or a derivative
thereof.. we use Whitebox Enterprise Linux
(http://www.whiteboxlinux.org)
- the build process for the SRPMS requires a BUNCH of kernel rpms that
you can later remove if you'd like.. the RPMS you need depend on the
architecture you plan to build for. See this post to whitebox-users for
some hints:
http://beau.org/pipermail/whitebox-users/2004-July/002320.html
- the standard GFS SRPM _REQUIRES_ kernel 2.4.21-15 which is available
in SRPM form from the redhat ftp. There is a slightly more recent
release available in there.. 2.4.21-15.0.3 or something like this. If
you want to build against that or a newer kernel you will want to check
out this site: http://www.hughesjr.com/ since there are some mods you
can make to the GFS rpm (which he provides a download for) to work with
the newer kernel versions.
- if after building/installing the RPMS and rebooting (if necessary) to
the appropriate kernel you get a slew of unresolved symbols in means
that the redhat gfs modules were not compiled for your exact kernel.
The part that tripped me up was that I ran an i686 smp kernel but didn't
include those flags for the build of the GFS rpm.. I needed something
like rpmbuild --target i686 --with smp and then things worked as
expected. The build will fail if you do not have the redhat kernel RPMS
installed matching your target build type since it looks specifically
for the directories named with redhat's schema under
/lib/modules/2.4.21-15ELxxx where xxx is whatever build option you
choose.. such as smp, hugemem, etc.

after I had the RPMS installed setting things up was just a matter of
reading the documentation.

Hope that helps
