Moin Moin Dominik!

I'd like to use the OpenGFS to access a hard disk concurrently from two Linux systems. The two Linux PCs are part of two different networks, which must not be connected over IP or an Ethernet connection at all. So the a global file system would be a perfect solution to enable secure and comfortable file transfer between the two networks.

The problem is the transportation of necessary locking information. As far as I understand, the two mechanisms supported by OpenGFS - memexp and OpenDLM - both use an IP conection among the nodes. Then there's also a no-lock, but that's for a single machine only.

I also found some documentation about the former GFS here <http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/cache/papers/cs/21918/http:zSzzSzwww.sistina.comzSzgfszSzPageszSz..zSzpubszSzNASA_GFS_paper_ver1.0.pdf/soltis98design.pdf> and here <http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/cache/papers/cs/20126/http:zSzzSzwww.extremelinux.orgzSzactivitieszSzusenix99zSzdocszSzgfszSzgfs.pdf/a-bit-shared-disk.pdf>. Both describe a locking mechanism, that uses the SCSI Dlock function to prevent nodes to wirte to the same area at the same time. So there's no need for an IP connection between the nodes. That's exactly what I need!

The fomer GPL project GFS now seems to be developped and distributed by Sistina, Inc. There's not much technical information available of there now Sistina GFS. But it seems to me, that they also switched to a distributes locking mechanism over IP.

Am I right, that your OpenGFS does not support locking via the Dlock funktion of SCSI or FibreChannel devices? Do you know if the Sistina GFS still does support this Dlock locking? (I already asked them, but so far no reaction.) Do you have another recommendation to a GFS for me, which fits my needs?

Schüss

Stefan
