Summary: "Not logged in" message

Initial Comment:
When I try to send a message to a friend, it says:

um yr face: Test
Unable to send message: Not logged in

I know my friend is online, but they do not show up on
my buddy list (although they are listed). I wasn't
sure if this is a bug in Gaim or if it is a problem
with my friend's IM program.

I am having a similar problem, but I can talk to the person.
The buddy list marks them as offline, but I can still talk
to them. At one point it successively gave me many messages
of them logging on and off.
