Bruce- I bought the SS4000 because of the great price and because of the Silverfast Ai bundle. Silverfast is a very full featured scanner software. It has features beyond what you'd probably ever need. They include an IT8 target so that you can actually calibrate your scanner (nice feature). You can do HDR 48 bit scans and multi-pass scans. Downsides- 1. Lousy documentation, that seems to be outdated (downloadable PDF file). Many basic things are missing from it, like how to eject the film, or even how to select a frame to scan. Also, Incomplete directions on how to set up the CM options. As mentioned, Ian Lyons' tutorials help, but he has also missed some specifics. 2. Poor support for scanning negs. Forget about scanning negs. Lasersoft offers an upgrade (Negafix ? $45 or so), but I have heard there are problems with customer support. You are best with buying Vuescan.($45) Upsides An amazing bargian for a very high quality 4000 ppi scanner. Also, for straight ahead scanning of slides the Polacolor works just fine. I am very happy with my purchase. David Corwin - Turn off HTML mail features. Keep quoted material short. Use accurate subject lines. http://www.leben.com/lists for list instructions.
