RE: Nibble mode???

<x-charset iso-8859-1>I was told something similar; but I was also told that the active hubs also
played a part in how many devices you could connect effectively to the hub
as well as how many hubs you could connect off of a given hub and how far
the chain could effectively and functionally extend. It obviously is more
important for unpowered devices like you note than for devices that have
their own power sources.

I did some research when I had to buy a hub recently, and from what I read a
powered hub is generally not necessary for scanners or for printers as they
use their independent power supply. The powered hub is necessary for such
items as the mouse, keyboard, maybe a graphics tablet if not independently
plugged in, and (OT) my daughter's minidisk which is why I needed the hub.

I don't recall which website I read this at, and (disclaimer) I am using a
powered hub myself, from which my printer prints just fine.

| I can only speak for myself when I say that I have almost never had any
| interruptions using a powered active hub that I could not account for as
| being causes by something other than the USB connection per se. But then
| again, I did not have any prior to switching from parallel to USB either.
| When I have had print interruptions it has been caused by loose
connections
| at the connectors, overloaded print spoolers and temp folders, or general
| protection faults and page faults in the computer system itself.

| One side note: while using the parallel port, I have not had ANY
| interrupted prints like I had with the USB interface. This may prompt
| me to buy a new A-B switch and run both printers off the one parallel
| port.
|
| I have noted several comments on this site about using a powered USB
| multiport box. Does the use of a powered box eliminate all the probs with
| interrupted prints?
