If you had a device (like a keyboard) with a permanently attached USB
cable,
you might need an extension cable, still keeping total cable length under
about 15'.  Of course there's no law that says you can't try something
longer if you want to.

Cyberguys.com has USB "booster" cables and claim very long cable run
lengths. I have an 870 hooked up to the end of one and have not had any
unusual problems.

Get their catalog, lots of neat solutions to all manner and sorts of
things.
