I have both an 1160 and a 3000, with the Epson driver, printing B&W, I find 
no magic PPI.  Have you tried B&W?  I am curious if you find a 
difference...

Also, and perhaps I ought to read back as you may have already stated 
this... How do you take the same image and print at different PPI without 
changing the size of the image, or resampling?  These can both throw the 
whole equation completely out of whack, especially resampling.
