CIS question?

Hello,
Can a partly filled CIS cart that has been removed from the printer be 
reintroduced to the printer? The carts were taken out, disconnected from 
the CIS system, standard carts were then used in the printer and now I 
want to put the partly used CIS carts back into the printer and connect 
them to the CIS refilling system. Do I need to purge what air has entered 
these carts? If so do I use the same method as if the carts were empty? 
If so will I get ink being sucked out as I try to extract the air? Please 
help.
