Ink smudging

<x-charset iso-8859-1>A client has experienced an unusual ink smudge problem; I'd like to hear
from anyone who's had similar.

System:
Mac G4 / latest drivers / Gamma 1.5 / essentially "standard" settings.

Printer - 1270
Ink - OEM Epson
Paper - Epson's new Premium Semi-Gloss (A4, Code S041332).

When printing at 720dpi, the results are excellent;
when printing the same file at 1440dpi the ink "pools" on the paper surface
to such an extent so as to make it unusable.
The "pooling" is so bad that upon removing the sheet from the printer,
trickles of black ink run across the surface of the paper.

Anyone had similar experiences?
