> -What kinds of problems have you had? Virtually all reports I've rave about the image quality of the 1270. True, until they start to fade. > -I've recently framed many HWM prints from my 1270 with matts. They look perfect, and it's my understanding that HWM prints behind glass are archivally sound. Nope, they're not. For those of us that make thousands of prints, we can't put them all behind glass. > -I use my 1270 quite a bit, as well as my wet darkroom. For me > the 1270 is a godsend, but not a replacement for B&W darkroom > work. The image quality and longevity of conventional B&W photographs is still way beyond ink-jet prints, IMHO. You probably haven't seen high quality digital fine art prints. Their quality is way beyond darkroom quality, in sharpness, and especially in shadow detail which you can achieve digitally that you could never achieve in a darkroom, without complicated masking procedures. > > Before I do so, however, > > I'm thinking of switching to another printer--with CIS and a non-Epson inkset. I'm intrigued by Piezography, especially since it may soon be available in color. Would an 1160 be the way to go or someother Epson > > model? 1160 is THE way to go presently. Get a couple. once they're gone, they're gone! I would deem any suggestions received to be life-saving! > -I dont' know much about the 1160. It can make nicer prints than you'll ever get in the darkroom, after you learn the ins and outs of piezography. > I hear lots of complaints about the 1270, and it's unfortunate that Epson made lofty claims the printer did not live up to, but I maintain that it is an amazing printer. I bought mine after following this list, fully aware of the fading issue, etc, and I haven't regretted it for a second. You might when your prints began to fade. They might not, not everybody has the problem. YET! > The printer is not perfect, but for the money, I think it's incredible. And for all the complaints I hear, I haven't heard of a better printer (as far as photographic image quality). Its the best in image quality other than a hundred thousand dollar printer. It even beats a few of them. There are at least 2 companies that are about to release their own ink cartridge refills for the 12 70. You will remove the chip, put in an electronic device and reprogram it, and then you will be able to refill. Hope is yet possible for the 1270! Now if only they'll be able to get a CIS system for it... Jerry - Turn off HTML mail features. Keep quoted material short.
