Re: The 1270-Bad news

You know Dan, I'm not going to take it personally that you linked your rant
directly to my post - I assumed you wanted to connect to the thread and not
single out one particular person. I don't get the "high dudgeon" act. We are all
just people here trying to do the best we can for ourselves and our customers
with what we have to work with. It's called the free market system. I think we
are all sad that our favorite printer manufacturer would cut us off from
exploring artistic alternatives to their inks. Longevity is not the entire
issue; what about quadtones? What about water-resistent inks? What's next -
chipped paper?

I think the problem stems from the fact that these printers, especially the
1200, are being shoved into a consumer rather than a professional category. I
can understand that a manufacturer would want to be reasonably assured that some
dufus isn't going to short out the heads. I don't think the majority of "dufi"
would bother. Refilling is a BIG pain and only a committed person would attempt
it and committed people tend to be better informed and use more ink.

I don't think this will be an issue for the large format printers, which are
mostly for professionals only and they INSIST on a relatively inexpensive source
of ink or they will probably go to a different brand of printer. That's the
beauty of the free market - if some radical manufacturer out there sees a ready
market, they will try to come up with a solution. I'm sure somebody is working
on a just-as-good-as-or-better printing system right now and maybe will not
gouge for their ink. Or someone enterprising soul will hack the carts (I just
love Yankee ingenuity). Don't get me wrong - I LOVE OEM ink. It's beautiful -
it's just not terribly light fast, water-resistant or cheap.

If I were you, I would read the several well thought out and balanced replies to
your post and think about it. BTW, I don't see anywhere I mentioned the words
greedy and selfish and what a nasty remark about TV. You sure put me in my
place!
