I guess I would have assumed they were talking about networking the printer, where there is definitely a problem in this respect. Have you tried it and confirmed that it doesn't work with your hookup? If you have USB ports, a possible alternative might be a USB-to-parallel converter (although if SM2 won't work through a pass-through port, it probably wouldn't work with USB either.) Perhaps you could get your scanner to work through a USB-to- parallel converter instead.
