I've found several times that using a high quality printer cable can have a big effect!! I had an HP 820 that printed fine locally but when I shared it over the network (peer to peer) and had people printing to it, it wouldn't work reliably. It drove me nuts, I couldn't figure out why it would say "printer offline" or "printer out of paper"!! It would say this even when the local computer could print fine without these errors. Then I happened to get an IEEE 12XX rated cable and replaced the generic no-name cable and guess what, all those problems vanished! It was like magic...and really surprised me . I still don't know why the local computer had no problem with the cheap cable, but over the network it did make a difference....I assumed the local computer was passing along the printer data from the remote computer....but guess it works differently. I think it has something to do with the bi-directional communication....the printer lets the computer know its offline or online, and/or out of paper....and somehow that wasn't being passed fast enough or the network print didn't try enough times to get that info, while the local printing tried more times and so usually got the info correctly. With a low quality cable, you may have to re-send data a few times before you get it.
