<x-flowed>I joined this list to help me decide between an Epson 9000 and a 
Roland Hi-Fi Jet. I just got off the phone from ordering the Roland.

A big factor in my decision was all the dissent in this mailing list. 
Really, you guys are just like school children: "This is the way I 
think it is, and I'm not listening to you anymore!"

I want to do fine art prints. With the Roland, you buy their media 
and ink, warn the customer about "museum conditions," and give them a 
copy of Wilhelm's report on >120 year lifetime.

With the Epson, it seems to be, "If you use THIS paper and THAT ink, 
and don't expose to air, or maybe do, and use THIS topcoat, or maybe 
don't, and hold your tongue just right, or hop on your left foot 
while staring at the ceiling during a full moon, there is no 
consensus about how long the print will last."

My customers have heard all about ink jet fading. They need 
simplicity and re-assurance: "PQM Concorde Rag, Roland Pigmented Ink, 
more than your great-grandchildren's lifetime." What they don't need 
is a bunch of "yeabuts" from self-proclaimed experts.

The Roland ink and media may be more expensive. Maybe not, if you 
count all the futzing it seems to take to get third-party stuff to 
work well on the Epson. Besides, the media cost is inconsequential in 
a kilobuck limited edition print!

To the children out there: go find a chat room for your flames and 
counter flames! Sheesh!

To the adults out there: I have a great deal of respect for your 
temperance in such a high noise environment. Keep being nice in the 
sandbox, and if nothing else, you can at least feel good about 
yourself.

On Monday, I'll be making archival prints. In a year, some of you 
will still be arguing over how to do it.
