Oh but in my dictionary matt and matte are listed as the variant spellings
of mat (meaning not glossy) - but then I am using an english and not an
american dictionary.

I remember as a kid buying mat paint for model aircraft and such. Common
usage...

Depends a lot on what kind of english you speak.
