Ink splatter problem on 3000

<x-flowed>I've started seeing a problem with smudging and small amounts ink 
splatter on prints on my 3000, black ink only.  It only occurs on the 
right hand side of the paper (the side where the ink cartridges are), 
within an inch or so of the margin.  It doesn't seem to matter what 
kind or thickness of paper I use, nor on the paper thickness lever 
setting.

I wondered if anybody had seen this and could give some hints about 
what to do about it, or if it is just time to send the printer in for 
a general cleaning.  I've done a fair amount of printing, but not 
enough to have ever gotten the saturated pad lockup.
